Why a three-year-old? Over the last 10 runnings, three-year-olds won 5 of their 17 starts, a 29.4% win rate and the best of any age group. They also carry 55kg against 57kg for most older horses. Favourites have been reliable here too: seven wins in 10 years.

The longshot ticket: Realize Sirius, Reichsadler, and Elton Barows to finish in the top three. Elton Barows was only fifth in the Sekiya Kinen last time, but he won this race in 2023 and ran third in 2024. If you want a second outside chance, Ho O Biscuits has been second here two years running.

This race in history: the day three legends met

このレースの史実：伝説の3頭が出会った日

On October 11, 1998, only nine horses lined up for a Grade 2 at Tokyo. Three of them are still talked about today: Silence Suzuka, El Condor Pasa and Grass Wonder.

1998年10月11日、東京競馬場のG2。出走はたった9頭でした。でもそのうち3頭は、今でも語り継がれる名前です。サイレンススズカ、エルコンドルパサー、グラスワンダー。

The setup. Silence Suzuka had won five races in a row in 1998. He took the Kinko Sho by 1.8 seconds and then the Takarazuka Kinen, his first G1. El Condor Pasa and Grass Wonder were both unbeaten. Both were bred in the United States, and at the time foreign-bred horses could not run in the Tenno Sho (Autumn). So the three met here, in a G2.

レース前の状況。 サイレンススズカはこの年、5連勝中。金鯱賞では2着に1秒8の差をつけ、続く宝塚記念でG1初制覇。対するエルコンドルパサーとグラスワンダーは、どちらも無敗でした。2頭ともアメリカ生まれ。当時、外国産馬は天皇賞（秋）に出られなかった。だから3頭が顔を合わせる舞台は、このG2だったわけです。

The jockey's choice. Hitoshi Matoba had ridden both unbeaten colts and had to pick one. He chose Grass Wonder, who was coming back from a fracture after nearly a year off. Masayoshi Ebina took the ride on El Condor Pasa.

騎手の選択。 無敗の2頭は、どちらも的場均騎手が乗ってきた馬。でも乗れるのは1頭だけです。的場騎手が選んだのはグラスワンダー。骨折で1年近く休んでいて、これが復帰戦でした。エルコンドルパサーには、蛯名正義騎手が乗ることに。

The race. Silence Suzuka did what he always did: he went to the front and dared the others to catch him. He passed 1,000m in 57.7 seconds, a pace that should have left him empty. It did not. He won by two and a half lengths in 1:44.9 with Yutaka Take aboard. El Condor Pasa was second, the first defeat of his career. Grass Wonder finished fifth.

レース。 サイレンススズカはいつもどおり先頭に立って、「追いつけるものなら来い」と言わんばかりの逃げ。1000m通過は57秒7。ふつうなら最後に脚が止まるペースです。それが止まらない。武豊騎手を背に、1分44秒9、2馬身半差で勝ち切りました。2着のエルコンドルパサーにとっては、これが生涯初の黒星。グラスワンダーは5着でした。

Silence Suzuka ran in the Tenno Sho (Autumn) three weeks later, on November 1, 1998. He broke down while leading and could not be saved. It remains one of the saddest days in Japanese racing.
サイレンススズカは3週間後の1998年11月1日、天皇賞（秋）へ。先頭を走っている最中に故障し、助かりませんでした。日本の競馬でいちばん悲しい日のひとつとして、今も記憶されています。
El Condor Pasa won the Japan Cup seven weeks later, then went to France in 1999. He finished his career with 8 wins and 3 seconds from 11 starts. He was never worse than second.
エルコンドルパサーは7週間後のジャパンカップを勝ち、1999年にはフランスへ。通算11戦8勝、2着3回。一度も3着以下がなかった。
Grass Wonder won the Arima Kinen that December, and won it again in 1999. He also came back to win this race in 1999.
グラスワンダーはその年12月の有馬記念を勝ち、1999年も勝って連覇。1999年にはこの毎日王冠にも戻ってきて、勝っています。

Tokyo is the track where a horse cannot hide, because its 525.9m home straight is one of the longest in Japan. It is in Fuchu, in western Tokyo, and hosts the Japanese Derby, the Japan Cup, the Yasuda Kinen and the Japanese Oaks.

東京競馬場は、ごまかしのきかないコース。直線が525.9mと、日本でも指折りの長さだからです。場所は東京西部の府中。日本ダービー、ジャパンカップ、安田記念、オークスもここで行われます。

It runs left-handed. The turf course is 2,083.1m around (on the A course layout).
左回り。 芝コースは1周2,083.1m（Aコース使用時）。
The straight has a hill. The ground rises 2m between the 460m and 300m marks from the finish, and there are still 300m to run after the top. Front-runners who went too fast pay for it here.
直線に坂がある。 ゴール前460mから300mにかけて2m上って、上り切ってもまだ300m残っています。飛ばしすぎた逃げ馬は、ここで苦しくなる。
It is wide. The turf course is up to 41m across.

The long straight gives late closers time to catch the leaders, which is why Silence Suzuka's front-running win in 1998 was so striking.

Sunday is also Arc day. The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe runs at ParisLongchamp on October 4 over 2,400m, and two Japanese-trained horses are entered: Admire Terra and Meisho Tabaru, both five years old.

The link back to our history story is direct. The year after losing the 1998 Mainichi Okan, El Condor Pasa spent a long campaign in France. He won the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and the Prix Foy. In the 1999 Arc he fought it out with Montjeu, that year's Irish and French Derby winner, and finished second, half a length behind. No Japanese-trained horse had been second in the Arc before.

さっきの1998年の話とも、直接つながっています。1998年の毎日王冠で敗れた翌年、エルコンドルパサーはフランスへ長期遠征。サンクルー大賞とフォワ賞を勝ちました。1999年の凱旋門賞では、その年のアイルランドとフランスのダービー馬、モンジューと競り合って半馬身差の2着。日本調教馬として初めての凱旋門賞2着でした。

In 1996 the Mainichi Okan was run as an international race, and the winner was the foreign-trained Annus Mirabilis, ridden by Darryll Holland.

毎日王冠のほうも、1996年は国際競走として行われています。勝ったのは外国調教馬のアヌスミラビリス。鞍上はダリル・ホランド騎手でした。
